Benefits of Metal Roofing

New Metal Roofing for residential properties is an investment worth making. Unlike other materials, our BlueScope Steel products have been manufactured to meet Australian weather conditions. If you are in the market for a new roof, be sure to choose metal for the following benefits:

1. Longer Life Expectancy

BlueScope Steel has a life expectancy far greater than other materials. Tiles and asphalt will buckle under heat and eventually need to be replaced. Colorbond Steel, on the other hand, has 5 layers of protection that ensure longevity even in the hottest climate.

2. Fire Resistant

Metal roofing is fire resistant and will offer significant protection in an emergency. BlueScope Steel products are compliant for installation in high-risk fire danger zones.

3. Quick installation

Adapting to the demands of the ever-changing building landscape, Ron Nickel Roofing has been able to continually exceed expectations. Using lightweight metal sheets, we can complete installations quickly and efficiently.

4. Thermal Efficiency

Colorbond Steel has been designed to withstand heat absorption, providing excellent insulation all year round.

Metal Roof Installation

Metal roofs are less complicated to install than tiled roofing and can usually be installed in a couple of days. Quality roofers, like us here at Ron Nickel Roofing follow the Australian Standards for metal roof installation, so you can be sure your new roof is installed in a tried and tested method.

The process for roof installation includes:

  1. Fascias and guttering are installed.
  2. Horizontal battens are fixed to the trusses.
  3. Sarking and roof blankets are put in place – this helps prevent condensation and improve insulation against sound transmission.
  4. Roofing sheets are installed. Each sheet is marked for hips and valleys to ensure a perfect fit.
  5. The shape is cut using a nibbler to prevent burring which could lead to rust.
  6. Roofing sheets are attached and carefully aligned with the guttering to avoid any damp ingress.
  7. Valleys at the top ridge are bent up to avoid water or vermin ingress.
  8. Cappings are added to finish the roof at key points like the hips and fascias
  9. Swarf is removed – this final step ensures that any stray metal is removed from your brand new roof – if this step is missed then there is a strong chance of rust.

How A Metal Roof Can Increase The Value Of Your Home

Whether you’re a renovator or just want to future proof your home, there’s no doubt that a new metal roof has a positive impact on your home’s value. Here are just some of the ways a metal roof can increase the value of a property.

1. A brand new look

Forget dingy old metal roofs of the past – new brands like Colorbond and Bluescope come in a great range of colours so you can help your home stand out for all the right reasons. Whether you want to keep things classic or go for all-out impact, a new metal roof will give your home kerb appeal that counts.

2. Environmental credentials

We all need to take better care of our environment and choosing a new metal roof will up your home’s eco-credentials as well as its value. As well as being easy to recycle, metal roofing comes up trumps for energy efficiency. As well as helping to keep your home warm in rare chilly spells, a metal roof offers great thermal efficiency for warmer weather. Metal reflects sunlight away from your home, plus it’s thinner than traditional tiles, so it will cool down quicker. Add in top-notch coatings and you have a roof that keeps your home cool and cuts down those air-con bills.

3. Low maintenance and long-lasting

Another big plus for home hunters is knowing their new roof will be easy on their pocket. Choosing to install a new metal roof means choosing a roofing solution that’s low maintenance, requiring less roof repair and replacement. Choosing something like Colorbond or Bluescope Steel means choosing something that is going to look great for a long time. A metal roof offers great looks for less work – something that will appeal to any homeowner and add value to your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does metal roofing protect against bushfire?

Quality metal roofing from manufacturers such as  Colorbond have a Spread-of-Flame index of 0 and as such are considered non-combustible materials.

  • Are there restrictions about what colour roof I can have?

If you live in a heritage area there may be restrictions on the colour you can have for your roof. Traditional colours include greens, browns and greys, but you may want to choose something different, particularly if you live in a standalone home.

  • Are their different grades of Colorbond?

Yes, there are different grades of Colorbond available. The standard Colorbond steel is a popular option for residential and commercial properties, due to its durability and resistance to weathering. However, for properties in coastal or marine environments, the Colorbond Ultra steel is a more suitable option as it has been specifically designed to withstand the harsh conditions of these areas. It is more resistant to corrosion and has been tested to withstand salt spray.

  • How many years does a metal roof last?

A metal roof can last for up to 50 years or more with proper maintenance. It is a durable option that is resistant to weathering, corrosion and fire. The longevity of a metal roof also depends on the quality of the materials used and the installation process. Choosing a reputable manufacturer, such as BlueScope Steel, and a professional roofing contractor can ensure that your metal roof lasts for many years.

  • What kind of maintenance is required on a metal roof?

Maintenance on a metal roof is minimal. You may need to clean off any debris and check for any signs of rust or damage. It's important to have a professional inspect your roof periodically to ensure it's in good condition. Additionally, ensuring the roof is properly installed and that all the fasteners are securely tightened can help prevent any damage or leaks.

  • Which colour metal roof is the best for thermal efficiency?

The colour of the roof does affect thermal efficiency. The roofing colour, material and the design can all affect thermal efficiency. For example, a roof with a lighter colour and reflective coating will have a higher thermal efficiency than a darker roof. Additionally, the insulation and ventilation within the attic space can also affect thermal efficiency. It's important to consider all these factors when choosing a metal roof for thermal efficiency.
